“What is done at Grassroots level matters tremendously, it matters even more when these voices can get to be heard in the high court orders of power.”

Kristalina Georgieva has been walking a distinguished path in the Public Service. Her career is a reflection of what she believes in: fighting towards a better, more shock prompt world, where girls stay in school and a sustainable future is a priority in everyone’s agenda.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Kristalina Georgieva holds a Ph.D in Economic Science and a M.A. in Political Economy and Sociology from the University of National and World Economy, where she was an Associate Professor between 1977 and 1993.

The former CEO of the World Bank has been the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund since October 2019. She was the Interim President for the World Bank Group and responsible for the organization's efforts to end extreme poverty by 2030. Her public service career started at an early age as an environmental economist, and sustainable development has always been in her agenda. She served as European Commission Vice President for Budget and Human Resources. And before that, she was Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, managing one of the world’s largest humanitarian aid budgets.

In 2010, she was named “European of the Year” and “Commissioner of the Year” by European Voice in recognition for her leadership in the EU’s response to humanitarian crises. In October 2020, she received the Atlantic Council’s Distinguished International Leadership Award in acknowledgement of exceptional and distinctive contributions during her career of public service. Kristalina advocates towards keeping girls in school and making the world “more shock prompt”. She understands and states the climate crisis and its link to financial stability.
